Mikko Välimäki(Ph.D, LL.M) wrote a book published in 2005 “The Rise of Open Source Licensing: A Challenge to the Use of Intellectual Property in the Software Industry” (Full text available at Google Books).
The book contains information regarding the evolution of licensing models, software economic principals, intellectual property, open source licenses, infringement risk management and patents, and more.
I find this book interesting, despite the fact that it was published in 2005 (with some of the information dating back to 2003 / 2004), for two main reasons:
- It gives an in depth, still relevant, analysis of the evolution of Open Source Licenses.
- The book enables us to look back and get a perspective on how the Open Source market has progressed since the time of the writing (i.e. the author states that “…for custom software development and specific industry applications - Open Source is still a non-issue”).
If you have not read it before, now is as good a time as any.
